Redwork Quilts

She was a talented lady, always sewing, baking, crocheting.  Heck, as long as I can remember, she would be making afghans and, at the risk of hurting crocheter's feelings, I personally had more afghans that I would like to admit.   But…A thrill ran through my spine and a tingle in my heart as I began rummaging through my Grandmother's cedar chests and wardrobes.  As I went deeper, the items became older !  And then I found it, a quilt like I had never seen before !

I started asking questions to everyone and anyone about a plain, yet Redwork Quilt dated 1890whimsical treasure I found in Grandma's cedar chest.  I know nothing about quilts other than how to appreciate the designs and intricate work that goes into the making.  This particular quilt is white muslin with tiny stitching in each square with red embroidery over top this stitching as well - another hint I had was the date embroidered in the center, 1890!
After discussing it with a few crafters, I have come to find that I now have a red work quilt hanging on my wall.

The pattern books follow themes, such as historical figures, animals, flowers, household items, fruit and vegetables, children and nursery rhymes.  The quilt I have appears to be a mixture of many but flowers seem to have been popular with my family in those days.
